Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants 2015

Alexandra Paretta

As if Mexico City weren’t already robust with a lively culture and incredible food – the best chefs from all over Latin America gathered there this week for San Pellegrino’s Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony of 2015. From auctions, to conferences, to an elaborate feast to top it off – here’s the scoop on what happened in anticipation of the release of the list.

In the days leading up to the main awards ceremony, silent auctions were held offering bidders a signed cook book, a meal for two, or a meet & greet with chefs like Mitsuharu Tsumara of Lima’s Maido and Yerika Muños of Buenos Aires’s Astrid & GastónProceeds from the auction went to Farm Africa, a charity organization helping communities in Africa gain resources and find solutions to end hunger and poverty.

A number of chefs – including Juan Manuel Barrientos of Bogotá’s El Cielo and Fernando Rivarola of Buenos Aires’s El Baqueano – also participated in a conference discussing the questions, “What responsibility do top chefs have to society in Latin America?

When it finally came down to the awards ceremony, it was a pleasure to see Rodolfo Guzman of Santiago’s Bogató receive Chef’s Choice Award, and Astrid Gutsche receive Best Pastry Chef. And of course, it came as no surprise that Virgilio Martínez and Pía León of Lima’s Central continue to hold the No. 1 spot for Latin America’s Best Restaurant for a second year in a row.
